Ещё vs больше: how to choose the right "more" word

The main idea

Ещё = add to what already exists

This word is about addition, continuation, and repetition:

1. something already exists and you add more (one more portion, one more piece) → ещё
   • Дай мне ещё супа. — Give me some more soup.
   • Можно ещё один вопрос? — May I ask one more question?
   • Мне нужно ещё десять минут. — I need ten more minutes.
2. a process is continuing, not finished → всё ещё (although in some contexts learners may hear or notice just ещё)
   • Я всё ещё жду ответа. — I am still waiting for an answer.
   • Он всё ещё живёт в Москве. — He still lives in Moscow.
   • Они всё ещё не готовы. — They are still not ready.
3. the action has not happened so far, not yet → ещё не (нет)
   • Она ещё не пришла. — She has not arrived yet.
   • Он ещё не знает об этом. — He does not know about it yet.
   • У меня ещё нет работы. — I have no work yet.
4. you repeat the action → ещё / ещё раз
   • Скажи это ещё раз. — Say it again/one more time.
   • Давай ещё попробуем. — Let’s try again.
   • Ты ещё напишешь мне вечером? — Will you write to me again tonight?

Больше = compare with a norm, an earlier state, or another quantity

This word is about greater quantity, increase, comparison, or not like before anymore. 

1. something is not enough, you need more → больше
   • У нас мало времени, нам нужно больше. — We have little time, we need more.
   • В супе мало соли, добавь больше. — There is not enough salt in the soup, add more.
   • Мне нужно больше практики. — I need more practice.
2. before there was X, now there is more than X → больше, чем
   • Сейчас у меня больше работы, чем раньше. — Now I have more work than before.
   • Сегодня людей больше, чем вчера. — There are more people today than yesterday.
   • В этом году туристов больше, чем в прошлом. — This year there are more tourists than last year.
3. not like before anymore → больше не
   • Я больше не хочу туда ходить. — I do not want to go there anymore.
   • Он больше не работает здесь. — He does not work here anymore.
   • Я больше не буду это делать. — I will not do it anymore.

Let's compare:

Можно мне ещё кофе? — Can I have some more coffee?

Coffee already exists, and you simply want an additional portion.

Мне нужно больше кофе. — I need more coffee.

The current amount is not enough, and a greater quantity is needed.

Я хочу ещё погулять. — I want to walk a bit more / I want to keep walking / I want to walk some more.

Add one more stretch of the action. Maybe you have already walked, or you are walking now, and you want to continue a bit more.

Я хочу больше гулять. — I want to walk more.

This compares your current habit with the desired one: now you do not walk enough, and you want to increase the amount in general.

So:

• ещё — an extra addition
• больше — a larger quantity

You can think about it this way:

Ещё is a continuation line

Imagine that an action or quantity already exists:

[it exists] — and more — and more

That gives you:

• ещё кофе — some more coffee
• ещё пять минут — five more minutes
• ещё почитаю — I’ll read a bit more
• ещё раз — again / one more time
• всё ещё — still
• ещё не — not yet

They all come from the same idea: the line is not over, or another piece is added.

Больше is a quantity/comparison scale

Imagine a scale:

little — enough — more

That gives you:

• больше денег — more money
• больше времени — more time
• больше читать — read more
• больше людей — more people
• больше не хочу — I do not want to anymore

There is almost always a hidden comparison:

• than before
• than now
• than needed
• than someone else
